Abstract

I seek to explore emotions and the sense of tension that occurs between one’s inner world and the exterior world. At times the world can get utterly chaotic and still one must strive to keep inner peace. Oftentimes I feel as though my art helps me work out certain ideas, and that I get a sense of discovery from creating art. Each time I am creating a work I am learning something new either about the process or about the ideas that relate to the theme. I think about whatever is going on in the world around me at the time or whatever is going on in my life and channel that into my art. I take the best out of what I see and apply it on the paper in a manner that work the best compositionally. The process can be compared to a collage. It represents the fact that the world is a chaotic place. I feel that a work is finished when adding any other element would overwhelm the work or start detracting from the meaning that is already there. The composition feels like it has a good balance and the eye travels through the piece in an engaged way. My work seems somewhat abstract and expressive as I use simplified forms and bold or surprising colors. Bright complementary colors emphasize tension. Varying between ink pens and pencils allows me to achieve a variety of textures and intensities of color. A pen is more focused and sharp while a pencil is more subtle and diffused. Flowing shapes and lines can emphasize inner peace while colors and texture can help me convey the chaos of the world.
