Identifying an Identity
Abstract
Discovering one’s identity is more than what it’s cut out to be. It makes up who we are and the actions we take. Unbeknownst to us, however, it doesn’t stay the same. Just like our body and emotions, our identity is always changing, and that’s ok. For some people, it might be hard to identify who they are. In some cases, a person may put on a false identity to please others, which is why it's so important to explore your identity in order to know yourself. A couple of ways to do this is by breaking down your identity to its simple components and reflecting on each section separately. When conducting research on what makes up an identity and how it’s created, I’ve found that it can be impacted by the people that surround you (inner circle), likes and dislikes, as well as the living environment, all of which are constantly changing. In regards to the project, I’ll be designing a website that will be set up to guide those who wish to explore their identity in further details, as well as providing online sources and/or materials for further research. Showcasing identity exploration in a fun and exciting way allows the process to be something you shouldn’t dread or be afraid of. In addition to this, I will also be having an interactive display, which would be a mirror, or as I like to call it, a self-reflection piece. With this display, the audience will be able to reflect on themselves, as well as have the opportunity to draw out or write a small message on what they believe makes up their identity, or what they want to know more about themselves. Following this, they will be able to take a picture/selfie of their work and share it onto social media (preferably instagram), using a hashtag. A person’s identity shouldn’t be hidden, but embraced.
