Abstract

In the form of a comic book set in the Caribbean in 1493, Tales of the New World follows a time traveler helping the Taino people fight against the Spanish conquistadors. Rewriting this history through speculative storytelling opens the door to imagining a different outcome. My goal is to create a narrative where the oppressed triumph over tyranny, offering a sense of hope and empowerment. Using historically accurate locations, characters, and settings to create a fun and engaging historical fiction, I want to dramatize some of their characteristics and use them as symbols for the impacts that the Conquistadors had on the Taino people. I am particularly interested in how audiences with different connections to this history will interpret the story. Through Tales of the New World, I aim to explore themes of historical resistance, resilience, and justice through an alternate history lens. By blending real events with speculative storytelling, this project seeks to honor the Taíno people’s legacy while inviting audiences to reimagine historical narratives. Ultimately, I hope this comic inspires conversations about colonial history, cultural survival, and the power of storytelling as a form of resistance.
