Abstract

The series “Dez-tino” has consisted of combining specific narratives within Mexican cultural mythology and varying aspects of personal identity such as gender, sexuality, trauma, and past experiences. This has led to experimentation with imagery as I convey these “core moments”. When deciding upon compositions, a lot of thought is put into what memories and emotions stand out most in life and how they could be visually represented in an immersive way. The research into my culture, queerness, and other related iconography revealed a trove of applicable stories that I have interwoven my life experiences via themed self portraiture. This series consists of numerous works that may seem to widely vary in subject matter but all allude to pivotal aspects of my existence. Within these narrative-based, multimedia artworks, personal identity is explored as a whole, challenging both myself and the viewer to confront and relate upon intense emotions, traumas and triumphs.
