Abstract
The Earth and its creatures have a protective magic to them that I capture in my work through storytelling, a tool that has always been at the center of my creative imagination. I combine the whimsical with the sublime. Viewers are pushed to imagine worlds ruled by fantastical creatures, where logic is close by but not quite there. My artwork feels like peering straight into the dreaming mind of a sleeper. The animals peer back in distrust, guarding their realm from human invaders. If there are elements of humanity mentioned anywhere in my work, then it is only in the destruction left behind by the fauna. My artwork incorporates lively colors and soft shapes. Those defining features show through in ethereal acrylic paintings, ghostly watercolor washes, and bright oil pastel drawings. The animal forms live in these vibrant washes, plant life surrounding them on all sides and sometimes even merging with them. The world they reside in feels uncanny in the same way a dream does; the viewer can imagine themselves stepping inside the painting, and yet there is something not quite right. I use a dry brush technique with my acrylic paint, and oftentimes it has been said to resemble oil paint because of its soft blending. That and my gentle layering of bright colors works to enhance the dreamy composition of my art.
