Abstract

Disoriented is a painting series that highlights a groovy, illustrated world. While vibrant and playful, underlying emotions of dread and anguish run rampant across the series. This is apparent because emotions were the emphasis of the creation process; you’ll likely feel the way I felt when I was creating these paintings. This series was done with the theme of isolation in mind; this was the negative emotion I felt during the time of creation. These paintings do not read as isolation from first glance due to all the vibrant colors and illustrated characters. This was purposely done to showcase my positive outlook on life. Many people can relate to feeling isolated to some degree. We likely try our best to feel better since the world keeps moving no matter how we feel. It’s a sad and groovy series at the same time in order to show how isolation is a complicated feeling. This series is very illustrative as it includes my very own characters, swirling black outlines, flatness, and curved figures. The main character exudes this lonely aura through its facial expression, yet the painting feels inviting due to its warm, bold colors. Across all the paintings in this series, isolation is shown by having the curved figures surrounding the main character are all engaging with each other in a way that excludes the main character. The bold, exciting activity moving throughout the composition juxtaposes the stagnant main character that appears to be frozen in a world that moves fast. The acrylic paint pairs well with my spontaneous attitude; it dries quickly, which allows me to paint these sections in fast bursts of energy. Portraying isolation in such a complicated manner was done to show shows how complex this feeling is. The main character is surrounded by figures, yet appears to be out of place. There is joyous activity in its environment, yet its facial expression is melancholy.
