Abstract

As a graphic designer, I use an analytical, clear, and creative approach when working on designs. My interest in solving problems directly relates to my work process. Being sensitive to color, arrangement, structure, layout, and texture, are all influential pieces that directly affect my work. Observing and taking in my surroundings is an endless practice. The growth I experience as a designer comes from understanding my own visual interpretation of the world. Embracing questions or dilemmas in a piece is part of my commitment to inventing a well thought out and beautiful design. Often, my liberal background and forward thinking are what drive my subject matter, and influence my decisions in a design. Investigating how to use my design to elevate information and communicate it clearly is my most important role as a graphic designer. I look at design as a platform to spread awareness, and focus on celebrating diversity in hopes of helping to achieve a more inclusive world for all people. The conceptual framework behind my exhibition, I AM HUMAN, is to reach a new and more advanced understanding of diversity, with the goal of viewing disability as something natural, and not using it as a means to classify/identify someone. It is intended to help the viewer reconsider labels, and immerse them into the world of someone with a disability. Using a collection of multimedia through book designs, music, video projection, and posters, it takes the viewer on a journey through a young adult’s life that happens to have Down syndrome. The exhibit assists the audience in letting go of what they think they might already know about diversity in order to see it as it really is. I AM HUMAN will serve as a campaign that spreads awareness through branding, book design, and video. The campaign discusses the importance of accepting all people, and shows how we as humans can design a more inclusive world for all. Interesting design with call outs, different scaled text, and digital photography, assists in elevating information at the exhibition, and illuminating the unreasonable social constructs society places on people. The information within the book design will help draw attention to the unnecessary challenges people with Down syndrome often face when it comes to inclusion, and ask the audience why we as connected species allow for anything less than an inclusive world.
