Abstract

Revelation and Raiment is a series of fashion photography aiming to create an interpersonal connection between the model and the viewer where the viewer is left with a greater understanding of the subject in the frame. When examined closely even the smallest aesthetic choices we make in our day to day life say something about us regardless of what the reasoning was when making them. Even if a person gives no regard to their personal dress or takes only modesty into account when making aesthetic choices, you are communicating something about yourself through the manner in which you present yourself. Whether you think fashion is a vane and deceptive hobby or you consider it a powerful art form and means of self expression, the clothing that you adorn says something about you. It can be easy to make broad and inaccurate assumptions from examining one's manner of dress Ex. “She wears all black all the time she must be emotional.” Broad, and judgemental assumptions are not the directive of Revelation and Raiment. The photos in this series are composed to challenge you to closely examine the subject and the aesthetic choices they made when presenting themself and extrapolate things like interests, traits, and values. While clothing makes up a large portion of the self expression demonstrated in this series, other aesthetic choices like tattoos, posture, cultural garments, and facial expression also serve to communicate information from the subject to the viewer. It’s important to understand that it is not by any means the most honest manner of self expression as we can be in some ways very deliberate in the messages and information we communicate by means of appearance and dress. To present yourself dishonestly in order to achieve a goal, a wolf in sheep’s clothing. For this series however, I have asked that the models do their best to present themselves honestly and many have gone as far as to incorporate a “statement piece” to further communicate something about themself. For each model featured in the series there are three images. A full body shot showcasing how the clothing interacts with the model, portrait showcasing personality, and personal aesthetic choices, and a close up that shows the details of the statement piece.
