Abstract

There is a duality to my practice: graphic design and traditional media. Being a designer requires thorough researching: looking up references, diving into the subject’s history, knowing it from the inside out, and anything that is related to it. My methodology when it comes to design is taking the essential elements of my research and creating with the client/audience in mind. I create layouts that display content that is digestible for the audience and designing graphics that are recognizable and pleasant on the eyes. When designing a graphics/vector image, my process is the distillation of form and information to support the overall layout. When I create design work I think with the client in mind; however, when it comes to working with traditional media, such as graphite and watercolor, the message is my own. With traditional media, I gravitate towards work and methods that enable me to realize my concepts with figure drawing and landscape painting in a semi-realistic manner. When designing digitally, my ideas are continually evolving as I create; my mind constantly racing with infinite possibilities. However, traditional media grounds me to the present, and I am fully aware of each layer of paint I place. I enjoy the permanence and malleability that these two mediums allow me to experience.

Duality: Permanence and Malleability
