Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly impacted not only the school system but also the parents and caregivers in various ways, such as childcare, technological challenges, and the overall quality of education their children were receiving at school. The purpose of this research is to investigate the partnership between families and K-12 schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially from parents’ and caregivers’ perspectives. This study focuses on parents’ and caregivers' experiences and engagement in their children’s education during the COVID-19 pandemic, including their struggles, as well as their strategies and resources to deal with the challenges. The study uses a mixed method research that contains qualitative data from interviews and quantitative data from the surveys. This presentation will focus on the semi-structured, retrospective interviews with parents and caregivers in the Chicago metropolitan area, especially those from families of cultural and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds. A thematic analysis is conducted to analyze the interview data. The findings will provide an in-depth understanding about parents’ and caregivers’ experiences, regarding challenges, successes, and opportunities. More importantly, the findings will help enhance future school-family partnerships and increase sustainability in the K-12 education.
