Abstract

Using my experience with editorial layouts, I am creating my own magazine. Culture Untitled is a publication that highlights local artists and designers. Through interviews with student and professional creatives, and featuring images of their artwork, advice, backgrounds and stories, I will be able to bring the viewer a better sense of local art and design culture. In the art world, visibility is a very important aspect that all of us strive for. We want our work to be put in front of as many people as possible, especially if they happen to fall into who we as individuals consider to be our target audience. Visibility leads to connections of any kind, whether that means a sale, a job, a friend, or influence. Overall connections can lead to several different kinds of opportunities. Covid further contributed to a decline in printed media. Less people were going out and buying any physical copies of magazines they’d find at their everyday stores. At the same time, there was an increase in user consumption of digital media. Since more people were home, they were more susceptible to read magazines that were offered digitally rather than the printed version. With that being said, I will be offering my magazine in a digital and physical format to make the publication overall more accessible to the preferences of my audience. I plan on advertising this magazine out to the Northeastern and surrounding communities. I will create an Instagram account for my publication so that I can promote the release before and after launch. I’ll also be creating a website which holds information about my publication as well as the digital copy of the magazine. My goal for this publication is to create something for a wide range of local artists and designers, looking for inspiration, connections, advice and recommendations or resources from other artists in the Chicago area. I plan on creating all my layouts with the artist/designer in mind. The layouts will highlight the artist's artwork and background in an effective and unique manner.
