Abstract

My recent artwork is a reflection on my current day to day life, expressed through the esthetic and influence of growing up in the Chicagoland area during the 90’s and early 00’s. Bouncing between multiple mediums, my varied work echoes my current numerous life paths in hopes of finding permanence and balance. A contributing factor to the subject, medium, and stylistic differences in my projects is the large and varied interests and influences I have. My Dad introduced me to or helped encourage and nurture my interests, no matter what they were. Everything from buying me Transformers and Pokémon cards growing up, to taking me to see the Bulls in the 90’s while playing Black Sabbath in the car, has shaped who I am as a person and as an artist. These varied aesthetic influences can be seen incorporated into my cat sculpture, which originally was meant to be an ode to my two Bengal cats. The amalgamation of influences such as 90’s cartoons resulted in a Siamese headed, 4-armed, 2-leged, Nike Air Jordan adorned cat in a lotus pose, praying in front of a slayed rat. This concept for my sculpture was ever evolving as my development in mold making knowledge increased. Drawn in by my past and current hobby of collecting, mold making presented me with the ability to create a finished product in different colorways producing my own collections. By using multiples of casted objects, the fear of making permanent changes was eliminated, once again tying into the theme of my current state of insecurity and my attempts at permanence and balance.
