Abstract

Anthony Gunderson transcends the natural realm in his exhibition: The Ritual. This work is an expansion of life in its entirety. Many cultures have rituals: coming of age, religious practices, or the worship of deities. Inspired by the occult and mystics, Gunderson puts his disciplines and mediums on display. His ceramic sculptures and paintings represent the idea of a ritual and can be translated also as a depiction of himself. The spiritual plane is explored through this ritual exhibition, altering the direction of the viewer's desired future, if they choose to participate. The exhibition was inspired by the beliefs of different cultures around the world and their ancient artifacts and worldly practices. His main sculpture is of an imaginative ancient text in the form of a yarn-bound manuscript, which the whole room revolves around. The paintings are each symbolic depictions to support the ancient aesthetics of the ceramic pieces. The focus is a personified version of different practices by Gunderson. Two other ceramic pieces are a tree, symbolic for life, the other is a larger abstract piece with cultured markings. His paintings involve color patterns and schemes to entice the eye and include religious symbolism found in the Catholic faith and Egyptian mythology and representational work affiliated with secret societies. The last larger painting pays homage to ancient pictographs found in cave dwellings and new modernized art found in urban areas.
