Abstract
Memories are one way we communicate aspects of self to others. Most people will organize their recollections into memory. However, there are three categories of memories that humans have. The first is individual memory. These are memories that are experiences of one individual. The Second is shared memory, memories that two or more people can share. This can include a large group. Third is prosthetic memory, memories that become connected to an individual that did not have the experience. In current society more people are experiencing prosthetic memory due to the availability of social media. The compositions in The Versatility of Recollection are meant to be a gateway to the viewer's emotions. Each piece is made through an abstract digital collage, and each type of memory is represented by a specific medium. Abstracted portions are created to represent individual memory. Photographs are synonymous with shared memory. Photographs get filtered through bitmapping then a portion with shapes and values that are intriguing as cut outs. Typography represents how prosthetic memories become entangled with our own. A fourth element being introduced as an anchor is automatic drawings to represent being present in the moment. Without mindfulness, memories will not have a chance to form. The four elements are placed together to represent how memories interact inside one's mind. The emotions connected to the work are bought by the viewer. Their experience is the fifth element of the installation, one that only they will endure.
