Abstract
In this podium presentation reading of creative works, four writers present a variety written work that explores the relationship between the critical and the creative, the personal and the political, the abstract and specific. These themes were developed through instruction and experimentation in Professor Olivia Cronk’s Critical Writing for Creative Writers course. In the course, we have examined the distinctions between critical and creative forms, the proposed rationale for these distinctions, as well as the many ways writing subverts these categorizations. Our presentation will endeavor to examine the passion in critical analysis, the criticism inherent in creative writing, and the human drive to communicate, express and label. Ultimately, our presentation will serve as both a tribute to, and a deconstruction of, academia’s tenuous relationship with creative writing.
