Abstract

Exploring AI In Graphic Novels Francisco Holguin Department of Art + Design NorthEastern Illinois University, Chicago IL 60625 With the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its steady increase in use throughout the world, a stark divide emerges among people regarding its potential impact. Many voices of concern related to AI taking over jobs turned out to be accurate as we are currently seeing layoffs happening in favor of AI tools such as Google or SAP that have a bigger focus in technology. Tech companies are eliminating job positions in favor of AI or training their employees to be knowledgeable in using AI. Despite significant resistance to AI's role in art creation, readily accessible AI-powered tools such as Photoshop, DALL-E, Midjourney, and ChatGPT contribute to a surge in digital art and design. While artists and their audiences may speak against the use of AI, there is also a large community of people who favor AI use in art and design. There is a middle ground where AI is used as a tool to help art and design such as Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill tool that will fill an area of the composition by recreating patterns, lines, and colors that match the surrounding area. The exhibition will provide three depictions of a one-shot comic with around 20 pages. The first depiction is solely created by hand, the second created solely by AI programs, and the third using AI as a tool to help cover the weak points of the first depiction created by hand, such as backgrounds or objects. This work is an experiment in using AI to develop comic art, as well as helping viewers gain a better understanding of what AI is capable of, so that they can reevaluate their judgment of its usage.
