Abstract

Gambling, or the act of wagering money in games of chance, is becoming increasingly common in the United States. In addition to traditional casinos, many new avenues to gamble have sprung up such as sports betting apps and websites. This newfound accessibility raises concerns about the potential for gambling disorder to rise in the country. Because of how devastating the addiction can be on both the addict and people around them, the current study aims to better investigate and understand the causes of gambling disorders in order to gain insight into prevention and treatment. The study is an online survey that is both quantitative and qualitative. It will be administered to participants who either have a current or past gambling disorder and participants who know someone who did, such as a friend or family member. The assumption is that these people have a better understanding of what causes gambling disorder. The quantitative portion is a Likert-type scale which asks several multiple-choice questions with the intention of confirming or denying the findings of past research regarding the causes and treatments of gambling disorder. The qualitative portion is a free-response section with open-ended questions which can possibly discover new causes and provide additional insights on the causes and treatments of the disorder beyond the inherent limitations of multiple-choice questions. The findings of this study will solidify the fairly new and underdeveloped literature by confirming previously found correlations which could be used to identify risk factors and warning signs helpful in the prevention of gambling disorder.
