Abstract

FIL-AM Dylan Magahis Department of Art and Design, Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, IL 60625 Being a multiracial American is very common, as the majority of the United States is made up of us. The United States advertises itself as one of the world's most diverse countries, welcoming people of all nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Growing up, each of us has our own unique culture that influences how we are raised and the experiences we have. As a second-generation Filipino American, I grew up influenced by American culture and had little connection to my Filipino culture. As I grew older, my connection to and understanding of what it means to be Filipino grew. With this project I hope to share and reflect on my own experiences as a Filipino allowing others to see and understand that as multicultural Americans, we should be proud of the cultures that make us who we are. I hope to explore this concept through the design medium of trading cards. This choice was made to delve deeper into the concept of nostalgia and how trading cards, like ethnic culture, had a significant impact on my life. With each design, I will use my own distinct style and include a body of text explaining the significance of the subject matter. My goal is for viewers to learn more about me and my journey of discovering my Filipino heritage, as well as to evoke nostalgia in those who enjoy collecting trading cards.
