Abstract

The Blight Ritual Archive is an experimental resource book for acknowledging makeup as a tool for navigating one’s identity and gender expression. This project calls attention to makeup as an art medium that is used for creatives to understand their identities, the way they physically present themselves, and find their power. The Blight Ritual Archive examines historical shifts in makeup coinciding with gender norms; this research is intended to show makeup being used as a form of social resistance within queer and trans spaces. Additionally, this project comments on the beauty industry’s exploitive nature of women’s insecurities to promote consumerism. Blight Ritual Archive follows personal philosophy, tutorials, product resources, a featured artists’ section, and historical context that exceeds binary beauty norms. The tutorials and resources provided are intended to inspire anyone interested in creating by seeing thorough examples of this medium. The featured artists’ section increases visibility of artists from various backgrounds who have alternative approaches and applications to makeup. The Blight Ritual Archive is intended to increase gender, race, and body inclusivity within the general makeup space by openly inviting anyone to practice this medium.
