Abstract

Women are key contributors in the urban workforce and provide their essential services in an invisible manner. They care for their families, pay the bills, and share their stories with each other. The camaraderie with my co-workers and other working women that I know is valued and cherished. In this series, by making “visible” the “invisible” women providing essential services to us, the viewer will be more mindful of the people around them. The portraits depict an observed intimate interaction in a work environment of two women or depict women sitters that I know through my work experience. Permission was obtained to paint these portraits and interviews conducted with the sitters to ensure their stories are shared appropriately and with integrity.
