Abstract

With ethical communication, I aim to cultivate a mindful understanding of mental health conditions and neurodivergence while leveraging my Mexican-American identity. Through my work, I explore storytelling, the human experience, and visual design. I aim to communicate the values of growth, resilience, and intention while focusing on the human experience of neurodevelopmental and/or mental health disorders. This work is for everyone interested- especially designers, educators, and mental health professionals. In a world often indifferent to invisible struggles and the burdens others may have to carry, the goal of this presentation is to emphasize awareness and intentional compassion as these tools can help reduce social isolation and create a more humane environment. Qualities that connect my projects are positive messaging, brand symbols, and colors like the butterfly infinity symbol for adhd awareness and the semicolon for mental health and suicide awareness. I will be showcasing a body of work, including books, posters, photography, typography, a QR code to my artist website, and finally a mini “Little Library Tree House.” Through this project, I developed skills in technical web design, woodworking, typography skills, along with writing and communication skills. During this symposium, I am preparing an exhibition that will include the expanded project highlighting graphic and visual design through awareness and storytelling. The work will be displayed as a hybrid installation where viewers will experience mixed-media in original photography, typography-driven design, and iterations that show intentionality with design methodology. This body of work demonstrates my intention in communicating the values of growth, kindness, and resilience. It reflects my growth as a designer by showcasing my work through visual design and storytelling, branding, and typography. Ultimately, my goal as a graphic designer is to apply my passion for typography and storytelling by creating visual experiences that promote understanding, empathy, and wellness. With this goal, I am dedicated to expanding my skill set as a designer and artist to deepening my exploration of identity, structure, and care through design.
