Description

Butsudan crafted by Itashiro Fujiura (1875-1966) at the Poston Internment Camp in Arizona during WWII. The family had a farm and vegetable distribution business in the San Diego area. With Executive Order 9066 the family was forcibly evacuated to Poston. Along with many of the Nisei (2nd generation), his son Henry (Hifumi) was drafted for military service from the camp. Itashiro built the butsudan for portability so his son could carry it along with him during his tour of duty. It is unique in being only 2 inches deep.
