Abstract
Using my experience as a graffiti artist, I will demonstrate the evolution of traditional graffiti fonts. Evolution of Letters is a show about hand painted signs that highlight the importance of letter structure. My goal is to test my knowledge of various styles and techniques to create an interactive piece. My general interest is in letter development and letter interaction. By using color, patterns, and bold outlines I am able to separate each letter into individual sections that help complement each other. My work has an abstracted appearance that combines different elements together to function as a collage that conveys a message. These messages have personal meanings to me, but they can also function as ordinary signs one might see in public spaces. My work is an eclectic mix of styles, inspired by many different elements that at some point in my life I was exposed to. This includes typography, calligraphy, recognizable logos, symbols, comic books, figures, street art, and graffiti. As someone who was educated as a traditional graffiti artist, I have become a rule breaker. Just like any other sport in the world, Graffiti has its own set of rules. But at the same time graffiti is the act of breaking rules. I am at a point in my life where traditional graffiti has become redundant and boring. I push graffiti in a direction that makes one wonder if it could even be classified as graffiti. The concept for my work comes from multiple artist that I would consider Avant-gardes of graffiti. These artist inspired me to create works that push the boundaries of traditional graffiti art. Without having any restrictions, I have a sense of freedom by creating my own rules. The purpose is to help graffiti evolve in a direction that is more accepted by society. The show will feature five small canvas. As well as two large stretched canvases. I want to challenge myself as an artist to compose much smaller pieces than what I am accustomed to. I am used to painting big on large surfaces, so by focusing more time and effort into five smaller canvases, it allows me to become more aware of how to use smaller spaces in a more intricate level. The small canvases relate to the larger canvas because my approach to composing them was the same. I separated my composition into sections, allowing me to work on one letter at a time to vary the styles. My paintings are mixed media consisting of; acrylic paint, oil and water based markers, aerosol paint, and vinyl stickers. All the canvases will have about a 2 inch border that works as jail to constrain all the chaos of the eclectic collage.
