Abstract

The purpose of this study is to address the 91% dropout rate of African American Students at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU). This research will show that there are many factors that contribute to a student’s not returning the next semester and why NEIU’s retention is low. There are many best practices and recommendations that NEIU can use to address its retention problem. There was a survey done for African American Students to assess how they feel about the climate of the university and the resources they need. Other institutions have implanted these same recommendations and practices and their retention rates increased. The research will show the climate of the University for all students, focusing on African American students through survey given to at least 100 African American students. The research will also give a report of recommendations to NEIU’s administration to address this very important issue. The research will be carried out using a qualitative methodology to assess the following construct: pre-college factors, current mental health status, and the climate of NEIU. In this proposed study a mixed methodology research method will be used. The qualitative research method will be used because the survey will provide firsthand data about the why of the student. The quantitative research method will also be used to provide the secondhand data of the what factors of all African American Students at NEIU. The research design selected for this proposed study is explanatory. My research will be a Non-Equivalent Groups Design, quasi- non- experimental. There will not be random assignment and will be multiple measurements. N-O-X-O, N-O -O. Using a mixed methodology research design, this study attempts to find out why African American students leave NEIU and what can NEIU do to prevent this from happening.
