Abstract

Typography, art, and design play critical roles in shaping how we communicate by providing visual language that can convey complex messages in a simple and effective manner. Good design can help express ideas and emotions in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and easy to understand, making it an essential part of effective communication in today's fast-paced world. Latinx Americans are underrepresented in design. There is too much whiteness in design and so much more creativity in diversity. I want to make an installation to show the diversity that can be captured by combining typography, art, and design harmoniously. I plan on making three wooden sculptures of my typeface ENZO, which is deeply rooted in Puerto Rican culture. The typeface is influenced by the very talented graphic artist Lorenzo Homar, one of the most important representatives of Puerto Rican artists of the 1950s who gave life to the printmaking tradition in Puerto Rico. Additionally, I will create four large-scale vinyl letters of my typeface using the Adobe Suite program to add depth, interaction, and a blend of techniques. I will place one of the letters on the floor under the sculpture and three behind the display, creating a sense of depth perception and hierarchy by spelling out the first name of Lorenzo Homar.
