Abstract

I have a fascination with picture books that show minimalist yet detailed illustrations of a character's facial expressions, body postures, background settings, warm and cool tone colors, and shapes to create stories. My work centers on illustrations that are influenced by storybooks. My process involves creating work digitally, then conveying it into screen prints. I incorporate a sense of eccentric design to emphasize the features of the shape, color, line, and space. My prints help me explore the importance of craftsmanship in forming the layout of the shape and quality. My exhibition will consist of a series of illustrations inspired by the storybooks I read as a child. The prints will be displayed in the Skylight Gallery at NEIU where people can walk in as if they are the readers walking inside a picture book. The series called “A Gnome’s Life” depicts characters from my imagination doing everyday tasks that a viewer can connect to small moments from their childhood or a simpler time in their life. I intend to bring out the adults' inner child to have an emotional bond when viewing my illustrations, further bringing out the nostalgic feeling of looking at a particular image and recognizing childhood memories, and the good old days. My illustrations create this small world where creativity can defeat the limits of realism and bring imagination to life.
