Abstract

Not many people know the fascinating history of Poland. This country has a tale often overlooked but filled with gripping stories, resilient people, and the reasons behind its modern identity. I want to address this need and provide an opportunity for education. Therefore, I as a history-loving designer I will be designing a timeline installation highlighting key moments in Poland’s history. I believe understanding history isn’t just about facts; it’s about appreciating culture, thinking critically and finding our place in the world. Come along as we explore the roots of what is Poland today. Why focus on Poland’s history when there are so many other places to explore? Well, it’s because I am Polish myself. I moved to the United States when I was 12 years old. This part of my background makes me a good fit for leading this project This installation will span from the beginning of Poland all the way to current days. I intend to create a timeline where, next to a concept, there will be a little explanation on particular topic. I want to begin with what has put Poland on a map, and that is getting baptized. Getting baptized was important during that period in time. Therefore, I want to begin with this concept first. Then, I want to move to the first ever king of Poland. I want to include that, because it is important to know who was the first ever king of Poland. After that, I want to move to a battle that is called “Grunwald Battle.” I want to include this one, because it was one of the biggest battles in medieval Europe. I want to feature an important figure more of my audience would recognize this figure - Nicolas Copernicus. After Copernicus, I want to present one of the biggest calvaries that came out of Poland and one of the best in Europe. This calvary were called “Polish Hussars.” Next, I want to represent a concept about the “Polish Constitution.” I want to include that because this constitution was the first in Europe and second in the world (the United States was the first country to do that). A few years later, because of bad decisions, Poland was erased from the map. Three countries took lands of Poland and Poland decimated. The next concept will focus on Poland gaining their independence. As we get to the last two concepts, I want to focus on an historical event that happened during World War 2 - the “Warsaw Uprising”. I will close with the final concept of the abolishment of communism in Poland, making it once again a democracy. Poland was the first country in Europe to end communist rule. In conclusion, I believe that with these concepts my audience will become richer with knowledge about the history of Poland.
