Abstract

MY JOURNEY WITH ANXIETY Author Amy Brammer Department of Art & Design, Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, IL 60625 Anxiety can be found amidst the busyness of the activities of people’s daily lives. It can manifest itself as a knot in the pit of the stomach or even as a sudden tightening of the chest. This sense of tension can be felt both physically and emotionally. Within the tangled web of my anxious feelings lies a story of persistence, self-realization, and a strong desire for success. I am developing and designing a book entitled My Journey with Anxiety. Included in this book will be the various forms of anxiety I have experienced throughout my life and the coping strategies I use. The book will include illustrations and will be accompanied by a weighted anxiety relief tool. The purpose of this book is to help me better understand my anxiety and the situations that trigger it. Although the things that trigger anxiety in people vary, my goal is for the reader to recognize different forms of anxiety and realize that they can manage their feelings. I have researched different forms of anxiety and conducted interviews with people who struggle with anxiety. People manage their anxiety in both complicated and intriguing ways. This book will cover the eight different forms of anxiety I have and the events in my life that have contributed to this. Causes of anxiety can be a combination of many things, and once you can identify them, you can begin to manage it. Writing about my anxiety was a way to help make sense of it and will hopefully help others. Initially, I thought that writing a book about my journey with anxiety would help decrease my anxiety. In my case, however, I found myself reliving some of the events and emotions that I was writing about. Rather than letting my feelings get the best of me, I used my writing as an opportunity for positive self-talk, which helped me control my thoughts. Finally, My Journey with Anxiety has motivated me to be more aware of my responses to my feelings and to get better at solving problems.
